3-Step Mindfulness for Families: Birdsongs

Nature can help us feel more connected to the world around us and grounded in our bodies and minds. As we look for ways to engage kids during this time indoors, we invite you to use your next trip outside to establish mindfulness and spark creativity with this fun birdsong practice and art activity. 
    • Take a mindful nature walk. If taking a walk is not accessible to you, open a window or door. Silently observe the sights, smells, sounds and overall feel of the experience. If you can, stop for a moment, close your eyes and listen for birdsongs. Then, open your eyes and see if you can observe the birds. Write or discuss your findings. (10-20 minutes) 
    • Learn about different types of birds. After your experience in nature, watch a video about birds, noticing how they look and sound and what makes them unique. Consider or discuss whether you saw or heard any of these birds outside. (5 minutes) 
    • Put your creative skills to work. Create your favorite bird in its nest. You'll need the following supplies: construction paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and glue.
