Mindfulness and the Brain
Studies have shown that when we are stressed, certain portions of our brain are inactivated, and the Amygdala (a very old region of the brain associated with fear, negative emotions and emotions in general) takes over. Mindfulness practice can help us overcome stress and anxiety by decoupling the Amygdala from the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, which processes conflict and ongoing states. This helps mitigate the effects of stress and allows us to better regulate our thoughts and emotions.
Mindfulness can also improve our ability to focus, reason clearly, and self-regulate. MRI's have shown that mindfulness can activate the Prefrontal Cortex (in charge of regulating thoughts) and the Posterior Cingulate Cortex (associated with mind-wandering, self-referential thought processes, and memory recollection).
